St. George Island

The heavens declare the glory of God and the skies proclaim the work of His hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. Psalm 19:1-4.
Sunrise was glorious.

Our home for the week at sunrise this year. St George Island holds many cherished memories for our family through the years. View another vacation here.

It is not usually this crowded but we have never been over Memorial Day weekend.

Reading real books are a luxury sitting under the canopy. We don't have internet coverage on the beach so we can unplug, relax and read lots of books.
I zoomed out to see the shrimp boats.
And sailboats.
I'm always amazed at the sand art on the beach!

We take most of our food and cook all our  meals.  Barbacoa beef( purchased at Costco)tacos for lunch. We keep it simple and it's fun.
Sweet kale with cranberries and sunflower seed salad for lunch from Publix was yummy.
Our grandson caught a redfish but it was only16 inches long and to keep it must be 18 inches long. Several others under the legal size were caught too.
We're always hoping for our fishermen to catch our supper but sometimes the local fishmonger saves the day. This is grouper that was bought.

We ate trout and Spanish mackerel that the guys caught another night but I failed to get a picture.  Sorry guys. The guys did have some unexpected excitement this same day seeing lots of sea turtles and a huge eight foot manatee that swam under their boat! Of course, they didn't get a picture! View Google search here for a picture of a manatee. What a memorable day! Manatees are on the endangered list.
Blackened grouper on a grit cake for dinner.

Most of our meals were enjoyed al fresco.
Our traditional meal each year is Low Country Boil.

This is another year at St. George Island with  traditional Low Country Boil and all the family together. I realized I had not done a post about this trip because I made a computer picture book for each family and that wore me out!

Grandmama loves this pic of all her grands. The baby is three now.
And not to leave Granddaddy out with the grands....
We take walks after dinner most evenings but on the last night it is traditional to make a group picture. Mama cherishes those  pictures.
After daytime activities of swimming, kayaking, fishing and reading under the canopy one of our favorite things to do is walk on the beach after dinner and view the sunset.
Haven't the children grown!! Our son and his family couldn't join us this year but they were able to enjoy a beach trip with his wife's family.

We thank God for our blessings and a week of rest and time with family.

  3. What lovely photos! I love St. George Island. It is so beautiful and quiet. I love the house y'all stayed in. Was that a rental? We like to go to the beach and cook most of our meals too. They are better than what you can get at a restaurant most of the time and no crowds!

  10. It looks like you had a wonderful vacation Bonnie! I love that you cook, so much more relaxing than trying to go out with a big group. We always grill, roast vegetables and eat salads, to keep things simple. That kale salad from Publix sounds great, I'll be looking for that! Your grands are adorable, I love your tradition of the family photo on the last evening, I can't ever get my group to pose!

  12. What a wonderful post Bonnie! I love seeing your glorious sunset, heron and beautiful family. Your Low Country Boil looks delicious and is a favorite for us for the convenience and serving a crowd too. We haven't had a family beach trip in about 7 years. I miss unplugging with a book and relaxing under the umbrella listening to the surf roll in :)
